Tips for Surviving in a Dramatic Workplace

Employment Alerts 18 June, 2019

Workplaces vary from store to store because the melting pot of personalities varies. Some jobs are a little bit dramatic, and some jobs are pits of drama, but everyone still has to stay to survive. Here are some tips that may help you get by if you work at one of the places that are extremely dramatic with gossip, backstabbing, unhealthy competitiveness and the like.

Don't React to Targeting

Some people in the world thrive on getting emotional reactions out of other people. These reactions feed their egos, and they can cause you to lose your cool. You can try to avoid this by understanding the game and recognizing when someone is trying to suck you in. A response of indifference is the best neutralizer you can give. Alternatively, you could walk away and blatantly refuse to participate.

Disengage Whenever Possible

Understandably, it's not always easy to get away from the people you work with every day. However, you can still disengage from all the unprofessional behavior. You can physically distance yourself in terms of a matter of feet or yards, or you can mentally detach from everything that's going on around you.

Tune Them Out

Finally, you can master the art of filtering through environmental noise and only hearing what's important. Over time, you'll learn what matters and what doesn't, and you'll know how to avoid letting any ugliness into your soul while you're at work. If you have a hard time filtering out the noise, you can try wearing a little headset to work and listening to your favorite songs while you're there. You'll hear nothing but the sweet music you play for yourself.

You have to do what's best for you so that you can maintain your sanity and stay on your job as long as you can. Try them as you work, and you should survive until your retirement just fine.
