Job Searching During The Holiday Season: Tips To Keep Your Spirits Up

The holiday season is here, and if you’re job hunting, it may not feel like the most wonderful time of the year. The job search is always a bit stressful even under the best of circumstances. You are constantly balancing your activities, trying to keep an open schedule for interviews, trying to update and polish skills, searching online for jobs, networking online and off. It’s a full-time job itself.

And, it’s draining. If you are struggling financially, it is even more difficult. Add the holidays into the mix, and it isn’t surprising if you are feeling down.

What Can You Do To Keep Your Spirits Up?

A balance between action and self-care is the key. Now is not the time to give up, and it isn’t time to stop the search. While it’s true that employers often slow down the hiring process during the holidays, it doesn’t mean that you won’t find a job. It does mean that you have to keep your efforts consistent, with a sharp eye out for opportunities and openings.

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t also be taking good care of yourself. During the holiday season, there are plenty of stressors. People are in a rush, the weather is often unfavorable and you may be feeling even, more pressure to find work than you already were.

What Can You Do?

Aside from continuing the search, you can participate in activities that will lift your spirits. Volunteering is one such activity, and during the winter months, there are plenty of ways to serve in your community. You can also take charge and use social media to start a food, blanket or jacket drive for a local shelter or organization. Throw yourself into meaningful activities.

Get plenty of rest, treat yourself when you can and find ways to give that aren’t dependent on spending more money. Keep your celebration simple, and don’t feel pressured to go beyond your means. Stick with supportive people who have faith in you, and remember that you will have a job soon.
